Font Roundup: The Best Retro Fonts to Bring a Joyful Vintage Look to Your Designs

We’re in the height of a throw-back font attack, and I think it’s only appropriate to fill this post with out-there language as I attempt to describe the chunky, curvy retro fonts that are warming up our eyes. From branding to web and product design, we’re in the throes of a retro font revival.

Good news for anyone that hasn’t changed their branding from the 70s! What was once old is now new and back in style.

I’ve gone through Creative Market and done a hefty roundup of some new vintage font faves. Some of these fonts blur the lines between decades, mixing swashes with modern editorial sensibilities. Some of them are designed for a purely feel-good feeling, helping Gen Xers and Millenials re-adore their childhood toys.

Whatever their association, these retro fonts come in bold colors and are sure to put a smile on your face, take you to a sunny land, and buck the minimal trend (at least for the time being).

Hop on the bandwagon and have fun with your designs! Think about how your social media images, t-shirt designs, and website projects could benefit from these fonts that pack personality.

Let’s see some of the new favorite retro fonts.

Rylan

Rylan is a unique vintage font made by Jen Wagner Co., who’s one of my favorite type designers. Rylan features low cap heights, ascenders, and descenders, bundling up your text into a delightful, quirky chunk of text. Luckily, the artistic curves keep Rylan open and playful, looking like paisleys in your type. Paired with the contrasting bonus font Cairo Grotesque (included free), you’ll be able to create a really fresh vintage vibe for your projects.

The Beardy

Yaaassss… This typeface is about as over-the-top as you can get when you think of quintessential 60s flower power. Without coming off as psychedelic, The Beardy can instantly transport you to another era with its exaggerated swashes, curved terminals, and open type combinations. Think of this font for t-shirt designs, inspirational quotes, social media, and your next album cover design.

Avalanche

Avalanche is one of my long-time favorites. Recognize it from anywhere 😉? It’s thick lines maintain graceful proportions, making it stand out for use in both headings and body text (like pull quotes and thick paragraphs). Avalanche is also part of the Chic and Unique Font Bundle by New Tropical Studios that includes many of my other top-picks for modern branding.

Recoleta

Recoleta is a new standard by Latino Type. I keep coming back to this font, hoping that I will someday have a branding project in which I can use it. I’m trying to curb my habit of buying fonts just to have them on hand… but this well-proportioned, funky retro font is high on my wish list.

Restora

Restora’s interesting because you can’t quite place it on a timeline. When writing with lowercase letters in a thicker font, this typeface looks like it belongs in the 70s. But when using all uppercase letters, you could mistake it for a 20s-inspired vintage typeface. It comes with 16 different fonts and weights, including italics, and 730 glyphs, so it’s quite versatile in helping you create unique layouts. This also makes it ideal for both headlines and body text.

Emirates

Emirates is a beautiful swooshy font that combines many of the features you’ll find in modern display typefaces. So if you can’t just settle on one style, you can use this typeface for its rolling retro swashes, or for the finer cutout shapes in letters. Emirates is perfect for creating a dramatic look in editorial design, branding, or pull quotes.

Sunflowers

We couldn’t pass this one up even if we tried. The quintessential flower girl, hippie-in-the-fields display typeface. That’s a mouthful to say that we really like this vintage-inspired typeface. Flip through the item’s thumbnails to see how versatile it is for identity design, print projects, and promotional posters!

Mogena

Mogena is a modern serif — which means that it’s a little retro and unruly. While beautiful in size and proportions, it looks like someone swashed a wand through the letters, creating a kind of ripple effect, like its movement is seen through water. Mogena is playful and looks best big. It comes with both desktop and web font version.

Modern Bohemia Font Duo

If Modern Boho is inspired by the 60s free-loving spirit, then this chunky, playful font manages to pass as retro. Bringing sunny vibes and a delightfully simple spirit, the Modern Bohemian Font Duo works well for branding, podcast cover art, and of course social media. I love the contrast between the styled script and blocky letters. You can create a lot of versatility in your designs.

Orangum

While most of the vintage display typefaces featured in this post come with a single weight, Orangum is a font family in 7 weights, giving you the right amount of flexibility for everything from image captions to headlines. The curves on the thinner weights suggest a style similar to some well-known fonts like Canela, while the bold swash styles give it a look of its own. There are stylistic alternates for every caps and some lowercase letters.

Wished

Wished is from KA Designs, who’s been creating some stellar hand-drawn script fonts lately. Wished is also hand-drawn, giving you a groovy, organic look to your designs. You can see how this font looks with Millenial pinks on the cover art, but I can also imagine vintage plums, olives, and ochre yellows for a different effect. This is a font for having fun!

Dillan

Dillan is another think vintage typeface by Made Type. This font comes in only one weight, so it’s best for headlines and interesting subheads. Dillan comes with upper and lowercase characters. See this font’s cover images for some interesting concept art.

California Palms

California Palms is a 6-font collection made by popular designer Nikki Laatz. With three versions of the script and 3 of the hand-drawn serif, you can mix and match to create a watercolor, marker, or regular look. Nikki’s fonts always win, and this one is no exception; it has several 5-star reviews and I expect to see it all over soon.

Margo

Margo is a modern vintage font duo including a beautiful script. This is another handwritten vintage font from Jen Wagner, but unlike California Palms, Margo is all upper-case. This font is paired with a casual, stylized script, which makes it ideal for branding and logo design. Oh, did I mention it includes 12 pre-made logo templates to make your job easier? Get the Margo font set here.

Summer of ‘76

We’re back to the days of Disco with this all-out 70s display font. Described as “a nostalgic multi-line font inspired by the 70’s aesthetic,” you can only imagine this on LP covers, flyers, and the like. This retro font was originally created for the Hot Summer of 76 graphic pack.

Kristopher

This one is made by Vintage Voyage D.S. What’s old is now new, so if you need a fun display font with lots of thick lines and gorgeous swashes, this one’s for you. I especially like the product mockups that show how to use colors and set the type to keep your designs trendy. When done well, Kristopher becomes a surprisingly versatile typeface for modern branding and headlines.

Mogan

Mogan is a mega font with beautiful curves. Designed by Tobias Saul, the author of many other incredible typefaces, this display font is best used in large size for headlines, logos, posters, packaging, T-shirts, postcards, and much more. Mogan comes with 12 botanical photos as seen in its cover image. The fact that it’s the last in this roundup has nothing to do with its quality — check out Tobias’s other fonts here.

Wrapping It Up

You don’t have to go all-out and change up your branding to incorporate the retro style. But, if you do want to, this list included many serifs + scripts to help you out.
